Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the disease of the bones, and as the name suggests, bones become more porous and are more prone to fracture, especially at the wrist, hip, and lower mobile spine (lumbar).

Osteoporosis is genetically determined.

Poor nutrition, medications, smoking, and some chronic diseases cause early osteoporosis.

Bone architecture and the protein content of the trabecular bone are vital for bone strength.

Bone is a dynamic structure with active remodelling, resorption, and new bone formation in the resorbed areas.

With age, and especially in chronic inflammatory arthritis conditions, bone resorption is greater than new bone formation, which leads to increased porosity of bone.

There are medications that decrease the resorption of bone, and there are medications to stimulate new bone formation.

Adequate calcium, vitamin D, and high protein diet

Fall-prevention exercises are important.
