One of the most common types of arthritis in children is known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

JIA is of different types, some can involve a single joint or a few joints and are called juvenile oligoarthritis. Some can affect many joints and are called juvenile polyarticular arthritis, which can be rheumatoid factor negative or rheumatoid factor positive. Some can present with heel pain and low back ache, where it is called JIA (enthesitis) or a spondyloarthritis variant. Systemic JIA manifests as high fevers with spleen and lymphnode enlargement. Some patients can have juvenile psoriatic arthritis, which commonly occurs in those with a strong family history of psoriasis.

JIA can cause a common eye disease called chronic uveitis, which can be silent and can cause blindness.
